The Kolkata Police has issued a comprehensive traffic notification ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit to the city on Saturday, May 9. The visit is scheduled for the high-profile oath-taking ceremony of the newly formed West Bengal government at the Brigade Parade Ground. To ensure public safety and smooth movement for the VVIP convoy, Commissioner of Police Ajay Nand has ordered strict regulations on several key arterial roads connecting Central and South Kolkata throughout the day.
According to the directive, vehicular movement will be regulated or diverted on major stretches, including Esplanade Ramp, K.P. Road, Hospital Road, Lovers Lane, Casuarina Avenue, and Queensway. Furthermore, all types of goods vehicles will be restricted within the city from 4:00 AM to 8:00 PM on Saturday. However, essential services such as vehicles carrying LPG cylinders, petroleum, oxygen, medicines, and perishable food items like milk, fish, and vegetables have been exempted from this ban to prevent any disruption to daily life.
Parking will be strictly prohibited on several thoroughfares in and around the Victoria Memorial Hall. This includes portions of AJC Bose Road between Hastings Crossing and Cathedral Road, Khidderpore Road, and other approaches along the procession route. The police have warned that any vehicle or cart found parked along the line of route for the VVIP will be diverted or removed immediately. Tram services are also likely to be temporarily suspended or diverted along the affected routes to facilitate the movement of the official motorcade.
Local commuters are advised to plan their journeys as traffic police personnel will be authorized to divert vehicles from any arterial or feeder roads as and when necessary. These restrictions are being enforced in addition to the normal traffic rules and are intended to prevent congestion during the historic swearing-in ceremony. The administration expects a massive turnout at the Brigade Parade Ground, making these traffic curbs essential for maintaining order in the heart of the city.
